Urinary Serotonin and 5–Hydroxyindolacetic Acid Levels in Preeclampsia

چکیده
141 Abstract: The role of serotonin in the pathogenesis of hypertension which is one of the main symptoms of preeclampsia is of growing importance. The levels of serotonin (5–Hydroxytryptamin or 5–HT) and its metabolite, 5–Hydroxyindolacetic acid (5–HIAA) in twenty–four hour urine samples taken from severe preeclamptic and normotensive pregnant women were determined by colon chromotography and spectrophotometry. In preeclamptic pregnant women there was a significant increase in 5–HT levels (P<0.01), a decrease in 5–HIAA levels (P<0.001) and decrease in the 5–HIAA–serotonin ratio (P<0.001). These changes indicate that the serotonin metabolism is influenced to a great extent by preeclampsia or this opposite change may have an important role in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia.

Autism associated with low 5-hydroxyindolacetic acid in CSF and the heterozygous SLC6A4 gene Gly56Ala plus 5-HTTLPR L/L promoter variants.
The known Gly56Ala mutation in the serotonin transporter SERT (or 5-HTT), encoded by the SLC6A4 gene, causes increased serotonin reuptake and has been associated with autism and rigid-compulsive behavior. We report a patient with macrocephaly from birth, followed by hypotonia, developmental delay, ataxia and a diagnosis of atypical autism (PDD-NOS) in retrospect at the age of 4½years. Low level...
متن کامل5-hydroxyindolacetic acid (5-HIAA), a main metabolite of serotonin, is responsible for complete Freund's adjuvant-induced thermal hyperalgesia in mice
BACKGROUND The role of serotonin (5-hydroxytrptamine, 5-HT) in the modulation of pain has been widely studied. Previous work led to the hypothesis that 5-hydroxyindolacetic acid (5-HIAA), a main metabolite of serotonin, might by itself influence pain thresholds. RESULTS In the present study, we investigated the role of 5-HIAA in inflammatory pain induced by intraplantar injection of complete ...

Thirty four patients who had complete ischemic stroke confirmed by neurologic examination, were divided into three groups according to the time elapsed between the first signs of stroke and lumbar puncture: group A, 22-47 h; group B, 48-71 h; group C, 72-96 h. Nineteen patients with multiinfarct dementia (MID) assessed by neurologic and neurophysiologic examinations were also studied. The sever...
متن کاملMonoamine related functional gene variants and relationships to monoamine metabolite concentrations in CSF of healthy volunteers
BACKGROUND Concentrations of monoamine metabolites in human cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) have been used extensively as indirect estimates of monoamine turnover in the brain. CSF monoamine metabolite concentrations are partly determined by genetic influences. METHODS We investigated possible relationships between DNA polymorphisms in the serotonin 2C receptor (HTR2C), the serotonin 3A receptor (H...

BACKGROUND Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) of the gastro-entero-pancreatic (GEP) system are a heterogeneous group of cancers more common in the small intestine. In patients with malignant NETs, especially carcinoids, a number of prognostic parameters have been considered, such as age, clinical symptoms related to the neoplasm, TNM staging and histological grade, as well as urinary 5-hydroxyindolac...
